Lend me your ears . . .

Post by Ron Caliburn »

Attackers slice ears off 17 people in Senegal wrote:DAKAR (Reuters) - Unidentified attackers sliced the left ears off 17 people in Senegal's restive southern province of Casamance, a region long plagued by separatist rebel violence, police in the West African country said on Thursday.

The victims were among a group picking cashew nuts next to the village of Tampe, on the border with Guinea-Bissau, when they were cornered by men armed with knives on Wednesday, paramilitary police spokesman Daouda Diop said.

"All 17 people got their left ears sliced off," Diop told Reuters. "We rushed to the place where it happened but we did not find the attackers," he said.

The attackers' motives were unclear and the rebel Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) denied involvement.

Senegal is one of the most stable countries in West Africa but its southern Casamance region -- once a tourist hotspot and the nation's breadbasket -- has been plagued by low-level rebel activity for more than two decades.

The MFDC has been fighting since 1982 for greater autonomy for the mainly Christian region, which they say has been neglected by the Muslim-led government in Dakar.

But an attack like Wednesday's is unprecedented.

"The MFDC and its fighting branch deny all responsibility and condemn these barbarous acts," one of the group's leaders, Antoine Diamacoune, told private Senegalese radio station RFM.

"Our interest is to maintain calm until we can sit down with the government of Senegal and bring definitive peace to Casamance. We do not want civilians to be targeted," he said.

A number of peace accords have been signed over the years but have failed to bring a definitive end to the revolt in Casamance, which is cut off from the rest of the country by the tiny former British enclave of Gambia.

A public bus ran over a landmine in the region last week, killing one person and wounding 20 others, but in recent years the level of violence has generally subsided.

Anybody know who might need 17 left ears?

Someone who has 17 right ears?

Certainly someone who could say, "I'm all ears."

*Sigh*

Puns aside, I haven't a clue what this could be about.

I have a suspicion. I've heard there are magics out there that cannot be used without body parts.

That would be Necr... ooops almost used the dreaded n-word  . I know of a few magics that need body parts ... this one bothers me a little. I might have to look into it more.

It may not be magical, though it may be, at the same time... Ear removal, historically, has been a method of both punishment and torture. As I recall, I believe it was used liberally during the Inquisitions... I could be wrong about that.

It could also be a way of marking ones property. I have heard of people taking eyes, fingers, tongues, toes, entire limbs for that matter. This one drug gang near the border was totally into the devil worship thing and would actually kill people and use specific parts in their unholy rituals.

Its all insane. Really.

And Mike...its called [i]NECROMANCY[i] :D

Or you know, it could simply be some nutcases collecting ears for kicks. Not everything weird has to have the supernatural behind it.

I know what is called Ben, I was cracking an old joke from here on the forum. I have studied Necromancy, I know more about the subject than I some times care to.

Yes Soph some did take such trophies in Veitnam. It was done in a effort to demoralize the Enemy. Thou sometimes it was also done by men who had for a time lost their way.

It's not just Vietnam specific, and it wasn't just ears in Vietnam.

Some of the men in the compound who came back had fingers, teeth or more intimate parts (and proof that both men and women fought for the VC).

There are some trophy collectors in the monster hunting crowd, it's a natural behavoir, but it can get you killed while you try to collect.
