300 headstones toppled in Saint John cemetery wrote:The 300 headstones found knocked over Saturday night is possibly the worst case of cemetery vandalism ever seen in Saint John, N.B., say police.
"I think most people would agree that it's hard to go much lower than that as far as doing damage," said Saint John Police patrol supervisor Chris Morris.
"There's no excuse for it. You've got to wonder what's going through a person's mind," said Claudette MacLeod of Rothesay, who went to the cemetery Sunday to visit loved ones.
"If it's out of pure pleasure, that's really sick," she said.
"St. Joseph's Cemetery will continue making efforts in placing all vandalized stones back up on their bases at no expense to the families," said Darryl Olsen, manager of Saint John Diocesan Cemeteries, in a written statement.
"To the families and the patrons who have been affected, the monetary value is not the issue. These memorials are priceless," reads the statement.
"They've just essentially been tipped over onto the ground from their mounts," said Saint John police Sgt. Chris Morris, adding that only a few had been damaged.
"It looks like it was simply a matter of somebody having pushed these over," said Morris.
Morris said he had no idea how many people would have been involved.
Police are speaking to residents in a nearby neighbourhood to find out if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious Saturday night.
The cemetery is on Westmorland Road across from the East Point Shopping plaza.
I know a lot of teenage scum likes to commit petty vandalism, but the scale of the work here - it sounds like something else was afoot.
