Only thing German is really good for is swearing. I had an uncle that would curse a blue streak in German - you'd swear it was a demon speaking.

No kidding. I'm reminded of a story Natasha tells when she was in Berlin in the subway.

Although I have heard a few German birds in my time there that made me reconsider the language.

My uncle learned German being stationed in West Germny for about 6 years . . . brought back one of those birds with him.

Bert, do you mean to say that your bunker has a basement?

Gods, I haven't spoken German much in...a number of years. I wonder if I'm still as proficient as I think I am... I know I can certainly understand more than I can speak at this point in time; I *hope* I could still survive if you dumped me into the streets of Berlin.

I know I could still survive if you dumped me off in Mexico (or Spain, or most of South America), or in the Ginza of Tokyo, but...my German hasn't been exercised near as much as my Japanese or Spanish...

English is fairly common in Europe. Although I had a really hard time finding them myself, my friend insisted they were everywhere.

When I went overseas with the Navy, I was surprised to find that most of the stores we visited had an English speaking employee, and they knew the conversion rate between our currency and their own, off the top of their heads.
