Him and his comrades set out to destroy a wicked and powerful demon. They all died except Shang Li. Instead of trying to destroy the beast, he imprisoned it inside of himself. That is why he tried to be so calm all of the time.

on the plus side, he offers some unique insight regarding the mindset of our enemies...
