I actually have no idea, my research has only been able to uncover effects to date, not causes.
The best theory I have on the subject is that the belief makes it work. The stake through the heart was long believed to keep a dead person from rising, a logical assumption when one considers that the practice originally used a stake of 36 inches or so, thereby pinning the body in place. silver, I am not certain, but water has long been belived to be the great "cleanser", and what is more unclean than the walking dead?
I am not yet certain if the effects caused the belief, or the belief causes the effects - I consider it an "ongoing study"

I'm sure KT could shed more light on this, but this is what my research as turned up.
Silver and Water have a certain "purity" that causes damage to vampires. Wood, I'm not sure of, maybe purity again, maybe it connects them to the natural cycle of life and death, damned if I know.
Holy symbols work off of pure faith as far as I can tell.

I was once told that vampires are, in some way, elemental creatures and that the wood reconneted them to the earth. Didn't make any sense then, and still doesn't make much.
As for silver, i've always believed it to be a "pure" metal, and so anathema to supernatural creatures.

Konrad Andreas is at peace. I am something new.

Result should be something similar to silver plating anything in the detonation radius, with considerable overpreasure and thermal effects asa well.
Perhaps if functional on a hand thrown level something could be designed to reduce the radius, as well as the size of the device - to let's say 40 millimeters or less.
So a thrmobaric effect combined with a dustign of the target in silver - that would be a pretty complicated and expensive device, and I am unsure how effective it would be. The quantities of silver involved are too insignifigant to do any tissue damage at any signifigant depth. I expect a rash or burn like injury may occur, but little more than that.

Hi Everyone
I thought evil creatures are 'fected by silver because of Judas sellin' out Jesus for silver.

PS: Thats what my other Pa told me anyway.
