Work the angle of his family. The kind of trees he planted, where they were, the names of his family, the date they were slain, that sort of thing.

Was Mr. Li realy as suicidal as to seek death? The man I knew was so full of life, even if his smiles were rare and sad.

Suicidal isn't the way to describe it.

The best I could tell: He didn't wish death upon himself as much as he didn't care. He'd intentionally put himself in situations that were desperate in an attempt to spare others the pain of death.

By the same token he wanted to pass from this life into the next.

The best way I could describe him in this regard, would be as a tormented soul.
