A new hunt
A new hunt
I believe that I am on the trail of a werewolf. There have been a major increase in what appear to be animal attacks in the area I am currently in, but the feral animal seems to be showing fair more intelligence than an animal would otherwise have. Also curious is that all the victims have been related, and it appears to be a series of vengeance killings, even in some cases ignoring others that would be easier to get to.
I will post more as I find out.

Definitely keep us informed.

I am not ruling out anything at the moment. The evidence is pointing that way, but I know it is definitely not an animal doing these things. The creature is acting too smart. It is planning it's attacks when the people are vulnerable and like I said they seem to be directed at one group instead of random.

I have checked some of the places the attacks have taken place. I have found fur there and I am sending it to a place to have it tested. It seems like there was first an increase of attacks on livestock around here and then it turned into attacks on people.

They were a group of farmers that decided to do something about the attacks. They set up a bunch of traps in an attempt to capture whatever was attacking. They told the rest of the farmers that they managed to capture what appeared to be a baby wolf, but I have yet to get one of them to tell me what happened to it.

I don't know if the body just disappeared so much as they remaining farmers are not talking about it. I have spent a good part of the weekend talking with the locals trying to get information. I also make a trip out the woods near the incidents, but so far am turning up blanks.
Hopefully the lab results will shed some light on this.

Actually, last night proved to be it's final attack.
The remaining three farmers had all gone to a single ranch to have a pow-wow. I only know this because I had been following the most nervous looking of them. They went into the barn on of one of their farms and seemed to stay put until late at night. I was about to call it a night when I sensed something approaching fast.
I got out of the car and grabbed my gear. I headed towards the place where I was sensing something. When I got there I found fresh tracks doubling back into the woods. I immediately began following. I am not much of a tracker, but I was close enough that I could sense where it was. It didn't seem interesting in fighting, just fleeing. After a 5 minute run through the woods, I came upon a cave. The beast was there.
It told me to leave and I would live, and that she would have vengeance for her lost child. I aimed the gun and she attacked straight at me. I think rage and grief had made her careless, or perhaps she just wanted to join her child. The silver did it's job, and after a clip she was down. I removed the head with my silver plated blade for good measure and went into the cave where there still was a presence.
Inside I found two other "children". I hesitated as first not quite believing what I was seeing. Then they started to turn into what their mom was and growl and snarl at me. They were small but I knew what they would become one day. It was over quickly, they were too small to put up a fight. When it was over, there was no evidence that anything had happened except my own memory.
I am currently heading into the mountains for a few days. I will probably be completely out of contact for a little while. I need some time to ponder who I am and the possibility of what I am becoming.

Definitely get your head screwed on straight. Nothing can be worked out until that happens.

I love the mountains. Recalling that Armenian mountain village again. Been happening a lot lately.

I lived on a farm for...almost 8 years, in a rural area near Lawrence, Kansas. We raised mostly crops for ourselves and chickens for eggs to sell. We weren't a full-time farm; Dad worked as an electronics research engineer in Kansas City, and Mom was doing office work in Lawrence. My brothers and I went to school. We were self-sufficient during the three months where Dad was between jobs, once, when we really, really needed to be. Other than that, we were doing it mostly for the character-building experiences and to have the chance to live closer to nature.
I remember a number of incidents where we needed to put down predators to save our chickens... All of us had a great deal of respect for animals, so it was never easy. Knowing that some of them had distemper didn't make it any easier, either.
There was one incident I remember very clearly... Still gets me kinda down when I think about it... Our chickens were turning up dead, and not eaten. Dad saw a skunk in the chicken yard, and figured she was the culprit. By the time he'd gotten his gun, she was long gone...
He tracked her to one of the cars that was rusting away on our property. He put her down, and all of the skunklings that he subsequently found. When he came back into the house, he kept saying it didn't make any sense, things weren't adding up. If she had babies, why wasn't she eating her kills?
After losing several more of our chickens, we finally found the true culprit had been a particularly sadistic raccoon. We never found out if it was distempered or not. Dad put it down, and we cremated the body.
We held a vigil for the skunk and its babies that night...
I understand, in a way, how you feel, man. If you want, you can stop by, and we can hold a vigil for them, too.
The farmers were protecting their own, even if they did it the wrong way. The werewolf was protecting hers. It's always a damned mess when that happens...

I am currently at a Starbucks, and this will be my final post until I get back from the Appalachians sometime next week. I thought it might be important to explain what is bothering me before I vanish into the land of no electronics.
It is not that I killed were-children, I believe that they needed to be killed. It was that they so easily could look like human children. How easily they could have walked and hunted among us. Their mom would have probably been nearly impossible to hunt without help if she had not been half crazed. How many people are walking around in our cities that are not really people? How easy is it for them to get close and pick away the weakest of us without anyone knowing?
Likewise the two in the van weren't trying to kill me, they were trying to twist me into being like them. They did it without being up front about it, just slowly nudged me closer to the edge. What if I had gone along with their vile suggestion? I wouldn't be any better than that which I hunt and even now I am not sure I am much better. Even then, was removing her memories justified? She was just a normal human that was duped into a cult, yet I caused terrible things to be done to her.

Welcome to the Suck. Enjoy the coffee.
I am neither good at words nor a psychologist. I rely on someone better at words than me to give you some thoughts to take with you into the mountains.
Having ordered young men to their deaths, knowing they less than 1% chance of surviving the order, I cannot tell you how to cope with stress and decisions and all that stuff. You have to find that out for yourself. Find it. Do not accept any other result. Do not leave those mountains until you have a clear head and a clear strategy to which you are dedicated. Otherwise you are going to send yourself down the wrong path.
Good luck. My thoughts go with you.
