This report crossed my desk yesterday morning. It raised my eyebrow and those of a few of my colleagues. I, of course, recognized the MO and thought of you. You should be more discriminating in your activities. Too much attention could compromise us both. Detective XXXXXX has added this incident to his case file on the other burglaries reported in the parking structure. You've become his suspect in the investigation. Hope you took care of the matter.
Narrative:
On 2-19-05 at 0042 hours, I responded to the area of Pasadena and 2nd St in reference to a report of suspicious activity. I was advised by Mesa PD radio dispatch that a reporting party had called in reference a sound of breaking glass followed by the sound of car alarms. A short time later, the reporting party observed a dark clad figure running from the vicinity of the parking structure located at 151 N Centennial Way. The reporting party wished to remain anonymous.
Upon my arrival, I proceeded to the aforementioned parking structure. I drove my patrol vehicle to the third level of the parking structure and observed several parked cars, three of which had broken windows. The three vehicles were a blue Dodge Neon bearing Arizona license plate XXX XXX, a black Nissan Pathfinder bearing Arizona license plate XXX XXX, and a red Honda Civic bearing Arizona license plate XXX XXX.
The front passenger's side windows of the Neon and the Pathfinder were broken out while the front driver's side window of the Civic was broken. Shaterred glass lay inside of each vehicle indicating that it had been broken by an outside force. I found no means by which the damage had been caused, though I did note a peculiar smell about the air, one which I am unfamiliar with.
I observed that the parking structure is equipped with surveillance cameras which record each of the three levels. It is personally known to me that the cameras were installed as a result of a rash of vehicle burglaries and acts of criminal damage in the parking structure. I contacted the owner of the parking structure and asked him to respond to the scene. Dennis Green responded approximately 15 minutes later and allowed me entry into a locked security booth.
The booth is not manned 24-hours a day, but the cameras do monitor the structure at all times. Dennis located footage of the dark clad subject mentioned by the reporting party. I noted that the surveillance camera had timed the incident at 0030 hours. I observed the subject, who is believed to be male, wearing dark clothing and a black balaclava about his head. In addition, he wore a pair of unique goggles that obscured his eyes. The subject was seen holding an odd shaped pistol in his right hand and a sword in his left.
I watched as the subject appeared to engage in a mock battle with the two weapons he held. The subject twirled about, swinging the sword and firing the pistol. The pistol emmitted a large light with each discharge. It's make, model and caliber is unknown to me. It should be noted that during my inspection of the crime scene, I located no shell casings or spent projectiles.
I watched for several minutes as the dark clad subject danced about the monitor. Every once in a while, I could see a faint puff of smoke materialize in the air. After approximately 7 minutes, the subject holstered his pistol, sheathed his sword, and fled the air. The video footage of the incident had no sound. I collected the tapes and entered them into property as evidence (see attached impound record).
I spoke with area neighbors and asked if they had seen or heard anything suspicious. A few advised that they had heard the car alarm, but none reported seeing or hearing anything else. I was unable to contact the reporting party as they did not leave their name or contact number.
A crime scene technician was called to the scene for the purpose of photographing the damage. CST Smith #165 responded and took a total of 24 digital photographs. See CST Smith's supplement for further details.
Each of the three registered owners were contacted reference the damage to their vehicles. They each advised that they would assist in prosecution.
Disposition:
I am asking that CID follow up on this investigation by attempting to identify the masked subject seen in the surveillance footage. It is my belief that this individual may have had something to do with the 20+ other burglaries and acts of criminal damage reported in this structure over the course of the past month.
NFI, Investigation Continued
This DR documents my encounter with several poltergeists who had made a home for themselves in the parking structure. Over the course of one month, they committed all of the "crimes" reported. Broken windows, personal effects tossed about, etc etc. Typical behavior for this particular entity. My extermination of the poltergeists was fairly standard operating procedure, but I did not account for the surveillance system installed in the past two days. As such, I am now the lead suspect in the 20+ burglaries and acts of criminal damage. Such attention can be dangerous to our kind. Let this serve as a reminder to be careful in the execution of your duties.
