Though I try to keep an open mind this seems kind of silly to me. Food-animals? I can't help but laugh. I can think of no logical reason that anyone would try to breed a food-animal someplace where the native fauna would be extremely hostile toward them. Then again, aliens would have very alien mind...

I am going to agree with Mrs. Solstice on this one. I also add that I don't particularly care what if anything they covered up as it was too long ago to currently matter.
Not Necessarily. Assumptions like that have a habit of coming back and biting you in the rear at the worst possible time.
