Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village wrote:Tue Sep 18, 12:26 PM
LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.
Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.
Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.
Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.
Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.
"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.
Worth looking into?

Possibly, though I doubt it's alien biological warfare... It could've just punctured an old pocket of fluids and gases, and released microbes into the air. It also could've just been microbes in the meteorite itself. They said we've found microbes from particulates that originated on Mars, rocks that were ejected from that planet by the force of impacts of other meteorites crashing onto that planet.
I'm not entirely sure how the physics of that works out, but that's what they say...
Then again, they said Area 51 was weather balloons, or some BS like that.
Still, quite often, the easiest logical answer is the most correct one.

Well, it'll be interesting to see if anythign comes from this, but I'm worried about what sort of diseases might come from space.

another possibility, certain materials break down into toxic substances when exposed to heat, many of these substances are quite natural, think the heat of re-entry would do it?(A big reason I do not suspect any microbiological cause.)

So waht if it's something else that arrived at the same tiem as the meteorite?

Or perhaps the meteorite made terrestrial germs stronger somehow? Check this out.

I...uh, I think you mis-posted something there, Ron. ^^;
However, my wife saw the article I think you're referring to. Something about that they sent a culture of salmonella out into space, and it came back several times stronger than an identical salmonella culture they had here... I'd say that this theory's also a possibility.
Has anyone seen a follow-up to this story?
