The Island Adventure
Last Friday started fairly normal for me. I was getting ready to leave for work when my cell rang.
"Dreyson, where are you right now?" I recognized the voice immediately.
"Getting ready to head in boss, what's up?"
"One of our other techs have come down ill, we need you to go finish his work."
"Where is the location?"
"Central America, one of our richer clients has a private retreat there and he was getting his security system upgraded because of pirate activity in the region."
"He does not personally entertain our employees, but extends the offer of you taking a guest for company when you are not working. You needs will be met by his personal assistant while you are there. The job has to be finished before the weekend. The plane leaves in two hours."
"I'll get my gear packed and I believe I know someone that would be interested."
"Good, contact us once you get to the location." The phone went silent.
I quickly started looking for my suitcase as I dialed the phone to call Terra. I knew that she would kill me if I didn't extend the offer of a private beach to her.

I finished grabbing my gear and I stated towards the airport. On the way I got another call. Instead of just being sick, the man I was replacing was missing. It appears that he had since disappeared from his room in the house there without a trace. My guest would have to stay put, and in her place would be a company man.
We boarded the plane and were off at once. I slept for the most part on the way there with the exceptions for an exchange/refueling in Florida. Eventually I was being woke up for the final approach to the island.
The place was interesting to say the least and it looked more like a fortress than a island paradise. There were high parameter walls around most of the island dividing the place into three sections. One looked like a farm area and the others looked like they were preserves.
I got an odd feeling by this, but Josh assured me that it was there mainly to protect the house from local problems when I inquired. I was happy that I was able to bring my weapons with me.

The place reminded me of an old plantation house in the south, but it seemed to have all the modern conveniences needed. We were met by a woman that seemed to be in her 20's but there was something odd about her that I couldn't place at the time.
She greeted us to the island and introduced herself as the personal assistant to Dr. Morrison. She told us that we were free to roam the island area within what she called area one (the farmlands), but the rest of the compound was off limits. The part of the island we would be working at was located outside of the parameter wall. At that she directed us to our rooms.
After we unpacked I went to the security center to try to get an idea of what work remained. Josh left me to my work and started to try to locate our missing man. Being that we were on an island with only one real exit, he had to be here somewhere.
I found that most of the work was completed, the only part of the job that was unfinished was the sensor relays outside of what was known as Area 3. It seemed like I would just have to complete those relays and hook up a final antenna and the security system would be complete.
Just to be sure I started doing a full diagnostics on the installed equipment that would take until the following morning to complete. During it, Josh appeared to tell me that he was heading outside to look for clues.
It was the last time I saw Josh alive.

The diagnostic finished the interior area (the house and surrounding yard) and I called it a night while the rest was running. Everything was quiet when I bedded down, but around 3 in the morning the alarms went off. I hurriedly dressed and ran for the security room.
I quickly reviewed the tapes and saw that three large shapes had leapt the walls and were running towards the house. I swore and grabbed a shotgun from the rack. By the time I made my way into the main area, the door had already been shattered and I heard a scream from the upstairs bedrooms.
I loaded the guns and started making my way, ready to fire at the first sign of trouble. The floor was a mess, it looked like a wild animal had torn through the hallway and I saw that two doors were broken down. I wasn't sure which one to tackle first when I heard the scream again from the first one on the left. I immediately went towards it.
The assistant was in her night clothes, cowaring in the corner. Then I saw what she was trying to get away from. It was standing upright like a man, but it was fur covered and looked like a cat-like creature. I fired, only half expecting the normal ammo in the shotgun to do anything. The shot was dead on and the creature was knocked backwards by the force of the impact. Before it could react, I fired again. The bullets worked, and after two more rounds it stopped moving.
I went over to try to help the assistant up, but she demanded I go to the Doctor's room. I moved in that direction, but all I found was a shattered window and a trail of blood.

I looked out the window and I could see two shapes dragging a third into the wilderness. I silently swore and headed back into the room with the assistant. The body was still there, it looked like a cross between an alley-cat and a human. The face was human shaped, but the eyes were definitely cat. It had a small tail coming out from it and it was covered in short scruffy fur. The claws that were extended looked like they could easily cut through flesh.
I looked at the assistant, "Talk. I want to know what I am in the middle of."
"I... I... I don't....," she started.
I shook my head and let my anger get the better of me, "Don't play games with me! What were those things! If you want any chance of getting back the doctor I need to know."
She whimpered in response to my outburst and I was a little ashamed for taking my rage out on her.
"Look, I want to get out of here alive and I want to be able to get you out too, but I cannot do that unless I know what I am dealing with. They obviously move faster than us and they seem to be stronger than us. Our only hope is the be smarter than they are. Help me get us out of here."
"They are a black project of your government."
Before she could continue, there was multiple roars heard outside the house.

There was not much time to react. We were effectively cut off from getting down to the security room where more weapons were. I only had the bare necessities, and it sounded like there were at least six things coming into the house.
We needed a way out and quick. I looked out the window and saw a two story drop. It would not work as an exit. So I pulled her with me as headed for the only room with a door still intact on the floor. I fired at the first creature that was starting to come up the stairs and was surprised when it jumped onto the wall and snarled. I shoved her, fired again and ran after.
I shut the door and moved the oak dresser in front of it. I scanned out that window and saw the same drop, but there was a large four-post bed in this room. It was then that I was hit with an inspiration. I looked at her and told her what I wanted. As she started to move the first impact hit the door. I turned and prepared the shotgun, reloading it so I had a full load ready to go. Only nine shells left unless I could get to the security room somehow.

She finished the sheet rope as the first claw started to crack through the door. I had pushed the bed near it, and now I fired into the door to hopefully hit whatever was attached to the claw. The cry of pain told me I had at least winged it.
She opened the window, tied the rope to the bed and threw the other end out. The door was starting to give under the pressure of the force on the other side. I saw a face look through the hole the shotgun blast made and fired again. Then the wall itself started to buckle as they tried to find another way in.
"Time to go," I said as I turned towards the window. Seven shells left. I really needed to get to that room, but it didn't look like it was going to happen. Our best bet now was to get to the docks and take the boat there. She went down the makeshift rope first without too much difficulty, but as I was going down the sheets gave and I fell the last bit.
As I hit ground the door in the room must have finally given out, or perhaps it was the wall. Regardless, we moved as quickly as possible towards the main gates, only to find out that the gates were still sealed shut by the security system.

The only hope for help was to get to the yacht and make use of the radio equipment onboard. But the wall was going to prevent both of us from getting there. I was capable of at least fighting the creatures, so it made sense for me to be the one staying behind.
“I am going to put you over the wall. I need you to get to the yacht and put out a radio distress call, and get the boat a little ways away from the docks. I have a radio on me if you find another one on the boat, the frequency should already be set. I will talk you through the process of getting help. There should also be a few guns on board, do you know how to use one?”
“Only handguns.”
“Then find one on board and load it. If it isn't me, shoot it. Once you get to the radio, I am going to need you to tell me what we are dealing with. If you don't hear or see by nightfall tomorrow get as far away from here with the boat and put out a general distress call.”
She hesitated at first as if to say something and then nodded. I boosted her over the wall and as soon as I saw her go over I turned and ran. The first of the creatures had started to give chase.

I knew it was only a matter of time before the creature would catch up to me. But I ran for all I was worth towards the shelter of the work shed. There were vehicles there, and if I was lucky keys to go with them. If I could get one to the wall, I should be able to go over it and into the safety of the wilderness.
I hear the creature start to close and I dove to the side. The claws of it raking my clothes and biting into the concealed armor underneath. I roll and came up into a crouch but before I could get an aim on the creature it leapt into the air and clung to a tree. It paused for a second to turn towards me and jumped again. But the shotgun rang into the night and the creature fell awkwardly in front of me. This one looked like a calico cat had been crossed with a man.
It started to move and I slammed the butt of the shotgun into it's face. It slumped and I took off again, the others had apparently left the house to give chase. Six Shells left and they were all in the shotgun now.

I reached the shed without any other incident. Inside it was hard to tell that anything bad had happened at all. I left the lights off and used the small flashlight sparingly as I made my about. What I found worried me. One of the vehicles were missing, but the other two had their tires destroyed. It looked like the cat creatures had done some planning of their own. I swore and moved on. It was time for plan B, and I quickly found a length of rope that would do.
As I started to leave the place, I heard something being knocked over by the entrance. I froze and realized my folly. I was trusting my gifts to warn me of something in the area, and only now did I stop to realize they had not warned me all along. The slashed tires should have been clue enough that something was not right in the area. Now I found myself trapped in a garage/shed with something.

I was quickly reminded of a cat playing with it's prey before killing it. It didn't attack, but was content to let me think I would get away before cutting off the escape route. I had tried to back towards the back entrance only to find a pile of stuff knocked over in front of it before I got there. The windows were the same way, things came down to block my escape just as I was getting to them. Finally, as I tried to go out the front, it would drop and attack at me only to drive me back into the middle of the room, disappearing into the night before I could get a shot off.
I was getting desperate, knowing that other creatures had to be following the noise coming from the garage. Just as I was starting to give up, I noticed a kerosene can laying in the corner. Perhaps if I made the garage brighter, I would have a chance to get out before I was consumed. I fainted the other way and then darted towards it.
The creature came down at me, but I managed to knock the can over before I had to jump back away from it's claws. I pulled my zippo, lit it and threw it into the kerosene. A blaze erupted and in the light I found my prey. Unfortunately it had decided that now was the time to strike.

I tried to dodge, but I was too late. The claws torn past my armor and into my skin. I yelled in pain while trying to twist away. I only managed to half turn towards the creature as it pounced again, but this time I got the shotgun between us as we fell to the ground. My finger slipped in the fall and the shotgun sang out again. Five rounds left, but the creature jumped back in fear of the noise.
The flames were starting to spread, and I leveled the shotgun at the creature as I pumped the next round into it. The cat-thing leaped up towards the rafters again, but I could follow it this time and my next shot hit the target. The creature yowled in pain and fell back to the ground. I was moving again before I knew if it had gotten back up. This time I headed towards the closest of walls. The one that led into area two, a place I had never been before.
It was simple enough to get a rock anchored to one end of the rope and after a few tries, I managed to snag a branch strong enough to hold me. I put the shotgun over my shoulder and climbed the wall. The other side was a wilderness and I hoped that I could lose my pursuers in it.

Once on the other side, I started to slowly make my way towards the outer walls. I was hoping that I could use a tree to get to the outside parameter of the island and make my way back to the ship. It was then that a small voice was heard in my ear.
“Are you there? Please tell me you are there...” There were sobs in the voice, but I could tell who it was.
“Yes. Did you have any trouble getting to the boat, and did you get a message out?” I was surprised how relieved I was she made it.
“I made it here alright, and I managed to get the boat away from the island. You need to get back to the boat quickly.” Her voice was sounding a little more steady.
“What is going on?”
“I told you, this was a project of your government. The doctor had found a way to make animals more human-like and they hired him to make super soldiers. They saw the ability to raise a army quickly that could naturally see in the dark, move faster than a human, all of it. But something has gone wrong.”
“We only created six of them, all male, and put them into Area Three. Somehow, I don't know how, they managed to reproduce and they are more feral now. But that is not the problem, the government has decided to abort the project. I think that means there are planes or ships on the way to eliminate all evidence of it. We need to leave and fast. Where are you now?”
“I am in Area Two, making my way....” I paused as I heard her gasp.
“You need to get out of there, it is not safe for anyone to be in that area. The failure is loose there. The doctor tried to destroy it, but had to settle for trapping it instead.”
“Tell me what you can about this creature.” I readied the shotgun and made my way further into the trees as she told me what she knew about the failure.

What I knew now was that the failure would hear me before I heard it, track me by scent, and come from above most likely. My only hope was that I could get by before it woke up. The going was slow because their was no trail and the overgrowth was thick. The first light of dawn was starting to creep up. If I had not been in such a grim situation, I would have been awed by the beauty of the surrounding wilderness.
I had traveled roughly 20 minutes when I heard the first noise behind me. I wasn't sure if it was the creatures or the failure, but either way I was going to be facing trouble soon. I looked for a safe place to defend myself and found a clearing that would hopefully allow me to survive the next attack.

There were two of them this time, a white one and a tan colored one. One jumped from a branch into the opening, roaring in rage. The other slowly came out of the undergrowth to place me somewhat between them. I backed up, trying to keep both in my view as long as possible. The white one was impatient and jumped at me. I turned and fired, but only too late realized it was a feint. The shot went wide. Three shells left.
The tan one was at me in a matter of seconds. I brought the butt of the gun up into it's face, but it still caught my left arm with it's claws. I lost my hold on the front of the shotgun and the next attack ripped it from my hands. I reacted before I knew what I was doing and the creature was sent sailing past me with the help of its own momentum. I then dove sideways to avoid the white creature trying to attack me in the back. Instead of impacting me, it hit it the tan one.
I pulled the pistol and before they could recover and emptied the clip. It was then that I heard the ungodly roar in the woods nearby. The failure was aware of us and I knew what that meant. I changed clips while running back into the woods. The shotgun was lost in the undergrowth so I had to leave it. Speed was now more important than power or stealth anyways. Now I only had 48 bullets to see me through this night.

I heard the cat-creature and the failure chasing me, and then I heard the cry of a cat-creature in pain. The failure must have caught up to it and there was a battle going on behind me.
I could see the wall now, slowly growing up to it's fully height. The battle between the two creatures must have been a short one, because I heard the roar of triumph from what had to be the failure about that time. Only 100 yards till the wall, but I knew that I would never have time to do the rope trick again because the last 30 yards were nothing but scorched earth.
I readied the pistol and backed against the wall, and waited for my new attacker to come into the opening...

The creature was horrible to look at and it made me sick when I first gazed upon it. That cost me the one advantage I might have had in the fight. It's lower body was that of a large cat, like a lion or tiger, while it's upper body was like one of the cat-creatures. It was large, at least twice the size and bulk as the cat creature I had faced so far. The fur on it was mangy and matted, stained with the blood of it's most recent kill. The eyes were cat-like and bulged out of the skull grotesquely, and the face was that of a man stretched out to look more feline. The arms were not evenly grown and the left arm was bulkier than the right.
Any thought that there was sanity to the creature was lost in the crazy, blood lusted eyes it had. The claws on it were not like cat-claws for climbing but razor sharp talons for killing. It was created for the sole purpose of killing, and as it saw me it reared up and bellowed it's horrific roar announcing that I was the next victim.
It lowered itself to all four paws and charged. It's speed surprised me at first and my hesitation almost cost me my life, and even now I would almost swear that the thing teleported the entire distance. But as it pounced I started to move and in my eagerness to be elsewhere I tripped myself up and fell. The creature slammed into the wall and it echoed with the force.
I rolled with the fall as best I could, trying desperately to keep the handgun in my hands. The creature bounced off the wall and came at me again. I rolled with the attack again as it went past me and was able to save my skin but not my shirt and armor. They shredded as the claws went by. As I came up I fired two rounds at the creature, but it didn't even notice the one round that went into it. It just slid across the open ground and roared in defiance.

Remind me to post the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates" sometime.
A few on topic highlights:
Rule #6: If violence wasn't your last resort you failed
to resort to enough of it.
Rule #12: A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is
looking the other way, shoot it in the head.
Rule #13: Do unto others.
Rule #27: Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to
violence.
Rule #34: If you're leaving scorch-marks you need a bigger
gun.
Rule #35: That which does not kill you has made a tactical
error.
Rule #36; When the going gets tough, the tough call for close
air support.
Rule #37: There is no "overkill." There is only "open fire"
and "I need to reload."

I fired two more rounds hoping to hit the creature, but it moved blindly fast and dodged out of the way. It charged again and this time I was able to react quicker and fire two more rounds. It didn't even bother to slow as the first round went into it's left arm, and I barely outmaneuvered it to avoid losing my arm although it still managed to take away some skin.
I needed cover, and I was foolish for giving it up in hopes of a quick kill. When I got a chance I shot at the creature causing it to jump back from me. Out of six rounds fired, only two had hit it's mark. The damn thing was fast. I backpedaled for the tree line, firing at the creature as it gave chase. By the time I made it to the tree line the clip was empty and I had only hit the creature once more.
It was about then that I started to think I was going to die that night.

I had just about given up hope when I saw the body off to my right. It looked mauled and if it wasn't for the clothes that remained I would not have known who it was. Josh must have been caught totally by surprise. I worked my way in that direction and saw what gave me new hope for surviving the night.
I grabbed it and ducked behind a nearby tree as the claws raked it. As soon as I did I took off back into the open ground. I would need it to be in the clear for my new plan to work.
