After Action Report - Maine

I've just returned from a harrowing ordeal in the backwoods of Maine.
I received a summons from my good friend Arthur in early fall regarding the disappearance of several hunters in the area. Knowing me for sometime he understands my..... intrest in matter supernatural.
The price of what i discovered cost dearly the lives of 5 good men and women.
A pack of lycanthropes had taken residence in the woods near the community. This pack must have migrated down the eastern part of Canada as some of the victims in their den sported a brand of clothing only availble in the north. But i get ahead of myself...
At first the pack, not numbering more than 10 but their number would rise and fall at times, would pick off those that ventured into the woods. A kind of eliminate the strong mentality that we didnot realise until it was much to late.
of my companions i had with me Nathan, a valiant psychic of considerable power. Maxwell, an eager if somewhat out of his element electronics and equipment afficianado. Selene, a self styled occultist. Jarred, a mercanry of many years. Ty, a man sensitive to the passage of the para-normal.
Within the first few days of being there another attack happened and the towns people had decided to comb the woods looking for the rabid bear they believed the culpret. ah if only it had been a bear.
while the men were out hunting the beast down my companions and i decided to remain in town to "keep a watch on the backdoor" as Jarred had put it.
As it was our decision was a correct one. The beasts (if one can even call such a cunning creature a beast) had used the fevor to their advantage. withing hours of the party leaving the howling could be heard comming from the other end of town.
The attack came swiftly. we had prepared wel and brought down 2 of the animals. Unbeknownst to us one of our party had suffered an injury by being bitten. had we known that earlier we would have be prepared for what was to come next....
I must stop now. i still suffer wounds from the final ordeal and must rest for a bit.

yes, my appologies for not continuing my injuries were extensive and i have had to... rest a bit longer than i thought.
It has always marvel me at how werewolfs change forms, i suppose that it matter little to their victims but still it is quite interesting. for instance did you know that the hind legs can be either lupine jointed so that the animal must occasionally use it's arms to aid in acceleration or more human like allowing it to more closly resemble the Lon Chaney wolf man?
The bio-ology of the werwolf allows foronly one vulnerability... silver. other wounds heal far to fast though to be honest i've found certain fires and the powers of the mind and magic to be able to directly effect them and end their existance. As the other options are quite rare silver stays the tool of choice.
We had equiped ourselves with silver weapons. Bullets filled with a high concentration of silver nitrate. According to Jared true silver bulltets do not "tumble" (?) correctly. As my knowledge of hand guns is limited to point, pull the trigger and reload i will deffer to his experiance. We also had with us silver plated mele weapons, though after witnessing what the wolves did in the first attack we silently knew that if we entered into had to had we were done for. The frail human body simply is not in the same league compared to a supernatural predator. If melee combat did happen one would have to be lucky as the devil himself ...... or made of sterner stuff.
I'll have more later on and more frequently as i seem to be feeling much stronger now.

From my expierience, ranged stand off is typically your best chance of survival.
Straight up silver isn't as good for a anti-personl round, that's for sure. My silver rounds are like the russian steel core rounds. A conventional bullt with an exposed core of silver. On a normal person, the whole mass enters and does it's job like normal. Agaisnt a beastie, the jacket peels off and the silver core penetrates, doing it's job.

...did you catch something? Are you sick?

I heard about one dude who added "aerosol-vectored silver nitrate" to nerve gas.

Naw, Jack, mankind is the shit. Ain't no tricks they got we can't handle.

Ron>> i shall take you word for it, as i said my experiance in matters of gunsmithing are quite limited.
Willie>> no i am not sick and if i gather your hidden meaning, no i am not infected. i was very fortunate in that regards. more fortunate than some.
aersol silver-nitrate.... wouldn't that poison the average human as well as damage a werebeast? Also where in the world would a person find .... let alone alter... a nerve gas agent in such a manner. certainly nothing for the amateur or those without proper facilities to even think of attempting.
The human mind maybe able to over almost any obsticale or challenge presented it. But they are, after all, only human. Even when dealing with a creature as mundane as a Grizzly a mortal man is out of his leage. Here we are talking about a supernatural predator that specifically hunts humans for food. To say that they are a physical superior is the truth. the mental superior is still the humans and humans are sly beings.

back once again to the shapechanging abilities of the werewolfe it would appear that they all do not change back into a man after being slain. This sugests the possibility that some... where never men to begin with. While we slew them over the following months very few of them actually did not reverted back to the form of man.
The initial theory being at first that those who did not change had been werewolves for a longer period of time than those who did change it later became evident that the beasts were breeding amongst their own and not requiring the continous flow of survivors being infected to bolster their ranks.
as we made the town funeral parlor our ad hoc forensic laboratory, we took to examining the corpses of those un-changed by death the better to know the differences.
it seems that the brain secretes a type of chemical from the pituitory gland that isnstigates the initial change and then keeps producing it to maintain it's monsterous form and cripple the mind into a slavering beast.
It seems that as the chemical is transmitted into the victim from a bite it begins to alter the victims gland into producing the chemical itself. A theory has it that some form of Retro-Virus is at work but i do not have the requirments necessary to say for certain. The process does indeed initally take a month so legends of werewolves tied to the lunar cycle may be accounts of the survivors first changing.
as the chemical (venom?) works its way through the victims system they become increasingly aggitated and violent. This reflects the hormonal changes going on inside the victims brain and body.
it is a sad and horrifying thing to watch, especially to one considered a friend.

That's a relief.

My friend said the dude claimed to work for the US Department of Agriculture, in the pest control division. The silver nitrate would probably poison people, but I'm no chemist; I read that most insecticides are nerve agents, but to combine them... guess it's just our tax dollars at work.
To say that they are a physical superior is the truth.
My experience has been otherwise.

I never studied or really considered a biological origin for our enemies' tricks. Did the knowledge help?
