Encounters in Vermont

Encounters with supernatural beings are more common than generally believed, especially with ghosts. But every now and then, a new being appears. What follows is an example of how such a case develops when a new threat enters our world.
January 3. An Agency Contact in Vermont makes the following report. "A neighbor told me about a thing he saw last night. He knows I'm into weird stuff and wouldn't give him a hard time about it. Anyway, he describes this thing as a thin human being with no lower torso, and wearing a one piece pullover gown. He was asleep and it woke him up by tapping on his window.
"Of course, the guy was scared. He was frozen for a while, and it stared at him and he stared at it. Then it raised one of its hands and he saw it was carrying a rusty knife. It pointed at him and then it rose up into the air. That's when he saw that it had no lower body.
"I asked him for more details and he said that it was alive but looked like a corpse. The hair on it was like on a person when they get up in the morning. He said the gown it was wearing was dirty and ragged along the bottom. It didn't make any noise or try to talk. I'm stumped as to what it could be."
After getting the report, researchers began checking Lazlo Agency files for a match. Nothing. Speculation about the incident included a vivid dream, a ghost, or something that we knew nothing about. I was hoping that it would turn out not to be the latter.
January 10. A second report comes in from Vermont. It is partially edited to insure the privacy of the Contact. "I was in the area because all of the dogs were barking and howling. A lady ran up to me and said she saw a ghost. She pointed me toward an empty lot nearby. Nobody else came out but I had a feeling that others had seen something and were too afraid to come out.
"When I get to the field, I'm looking around with my flashlight. I don't see anything but my gut tells me something's there. As I turn to go back to my car, I catch something in the air out of the corner of my eye. It was a person missing the lower part of their body and wearing a dirty white gown. I didn't notice the knife in its hand at first. But as soon as I did I went for my gun. And I think that scared it off because it flew past me and out of sight. I tell you, I've seen strange, but nothing like this. The only other details I can give you is that it's hair was flying around and it was thin and pale, like a corpse."
At the Lazlo Agency, we now know we are dealing with a solid being, not a ghost. It hasn't harmed anyone but its actions have been threatening. A General Advisory is issued to all Field Agents.
January 13. A half dozen reports come in from Vermont. The descriptions are identical, and it looked like only one being is involved. It appeared we were dealing with something new that only wanted to strike fear into people. It was doing a good job.
January 14. The threat level goes up. A homeless man is found dead. A passer-by reported they saw a ghost kill him with a knife. As usual, the local newspaper makes no mention of the incident.
January 15. Two Lazlo Agents are sent to the area. The goal is to find witnesses and, hopefully, find this creature before it can do more harm. For the purpose of identifying reports relating to the creature, someone gives it the name "Night Terror."
January 16. Our agents are canvassing the area. A few more people admit to seeing it, once again assuming that our people were sent by some government agency. There is no noticeable pattern to its activities at this point, and no clue as to where it comes from.
Another report comes in just before midnight. A local man has shot at a thing that was at his bedroom window. Fortunately, an Agency Contact alerts us and we alerted our Agents in position. They are able to take a statement from the individual shortly after the police leave his home.

"Like I told the police, I don't know what it was. As soon as I saw it had a knife, I shot it. It was right up against my bedroom window, tapping on the glass. If you ask me, it looked like a ghoul from one of those movies.
"The really crazy part was that when the police went out to look for it, they didn't find no body. Instead they told me somebody had poured antifreeze on my lawn."
Agents confirmed the presence of a green liquid that resembled antifreeze in color. Within a few minutes, it turned into green colored sand. An attempt was made to retrieve a sample but it disappeared while inside the container.
I'll pass along a follow up to this tomorrow.
