It began with a call from an Agency Contact. The next day I was standing in a field in the Midwest. I've been asked by my superiors to not be more specific than that.
"Well, I saw it in the mornin'. Looked like a propane tank, but I know it ain't. Dog didn't bark last night. Didn't hear any noises. So what do you think it is, Mister?"
"I don't know." I then turned to the specialist I'd brought with me, Alex Burnell.
"Beat's me. Let's have a closer look."
Me and Alex came out in the "All-Nite Plumbers" truck. We needed the space for the Geiger counter and other specialized equipment.
"Now, remember. Stay at least five feet away from it."
I never liked the UFO side to the paranormal. Too many books, too many theories and very few answers.
As we approached, I took in a thirty foot long, dull metallic grey, propane-tank like thing standing on four telescopic legs. Basically, if you've never seen one, a cylinder with two hemispherical end caps. But this thing had no markings, or any obvious welds or seams.
Alex ran the tests and everything came back negative. "I've got no radiation, nothing on infrared or ultraviolet, magnetometer reads normal, grass around the site is undisturbed. Nothing."
"So what's your theory about what it is and how it got here?"
"Right now. I'm guessing a helicopter left it. Some kind of government op. But it could be some type of antigravity ship. Either ours or theirs."
"Wait a minute. You don't believe in antigravity!?"
"I've seen some strange stuff. There's all kind of stuff flying around that people've seen. You can't tell me they haven't. I've seen it too. But this thing is brand new. Even the wildest fringe books I've got don't mention something like this."
"What did you mean about it being "theirs or ours"?
"Well, either this country or some other country or some other planet."
"Whoa, wait a minute. I'm not convinced that..."
"I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I put the facts together the best I can. That's all. Then I write a report and pass it on to Analysis."
"OK. So you're saying this thing is not dangerous?"
"No. Based on all the tests, it's not. But if you see, hear or smell anything out of the ordinary, back away."
I decided to get a closer look but that didn't provide any further clues. Alex headed back to the truck to put away his gear.
Then I momentarily lost consciousness. When my head cleared, everything seemed fine. When I turned around to ask Alex a question, I realized everything was not.
The truck was gone, and looking toward the farmhouse, it was gone too. I had been trained to avoid panic in situations like this. Step one was to call for back-up. But my cell couldn't get a signal. I checked the time. My watch had stopped at 3:10 pm. It was time to switch to survival mode.
I checked my 9mm, cigarette lighter and pocket flashlight. Still there. My next goal was to find the road we came in on. After about an hour of walking I could not find it. Next, I had to build some shelter and work out a plan. It would be dark pretty soon. Fortunately, I found a small cave in a nearby hill. Then I collected some wood. Camping was never this much fun.
Time was passing and I was considering my options. It was a warm night but the cave was damp, so I started a small fire near the entrance. I had a small knife and considered cutting down some tall, dry bits of vegetation left over from the winter, but decided against it. But after a few hours of laying on the cold ground, I cut them down and laid them on the floor.
I was hungry and drowsy. Sleep came and with it, strange dreams. A dream where I was in a dark place, a small town. It was very dark and I could just make out some buildings. There were no street lights or traffic lights. I was looking for something but I did not know what. Gradually, I began to feel that I was getting closer. Then I woke up.
Off in the distance, there was a softly glowing man. He was coming toward me. I pulled my gun and tried not to move. I had to get a look to see if he was hostile or not.
I was relieved to see that this tall, well built figure was apparently not armed and seemed unafraid to approach me. He wore a one piece outfit, making him look like a gymnist. He spoke.
"Who are you?"
"I... I'm lost."
He sat down, cross-legged, on the ground. "Where do you want to go?"
"I... I'm not sure where I am. Can you tell me?"
"Your are in Tewatna. The land of my people. I am Won Geh."
Oh boy, I thought. That doesn't sound right. "I need something to eat. I need... I need something to drink."
"Stand up. Put out your fire. I will take you to the home village."
"How far is it?"
"Distance does not matter." Before I could think another thought I was standing with this man in front of a small home. His glow was gone.
"What is wrong? Oh, the M shield has been turned off. It was only on for my protection."
I was soon eating and drinking in a simply furnished room. A small fire in an old-style fireplace kept the temerature even. I heard many stories about a world where people lived in small villages, Horses and bicycles were the preferred means of transportation, but there was no machinery or electricity. However, there were "remnants," ancient devices like Won Geh's "M shield."
"Where did you get the M shield?"
"In the Valley of the Old Time, sometimes one finds strange things. I have permission from the leaders to dig for the Old Things." He paused for a moment. I sensed he wasn't sure what to tell me.
"In the distant past, there was a great valley filled with the homes of the Elders. They made many things and had strange self-propelled carts. Something happened. No one is sure about exactly what. One day, the valley had been destroyed. Almost nothing remained of them and the things they made."
I had so many questions, I didn't where to start. Then I felt a strange pulling sensation.
"What is happening?"
"I don't know. It seems like I'm about to go somewhere."
"I understand. Here. Take this." He handed me a small, carved stick with multicolored bands. Then I was gone.
