They are trying to hide the truth

Despite giving us lots of great details of various sightings in the UK in the 1980's and 1990s, the report mentioned in this article attempts to discredit the entire UFO Phenomena.
It's drawing links between the prevalence of UFOs and Aliens on TV and in the Movies with the number of UFO sightings. This implies that a lot of the sightings are the result of paranoia from those frightened by aliens depicted in the movies.
Be warned, even when they show us the truth, they still try to cover it with lies.

"It's evident there is some connection between newspaper stories, TV programmes and films about alien visitors and the numbers of UFO sightings reported," said UFO expert and journalism lecturer David Clarke.
"Aside from 1996, one of the busiest years for UFO sightings reported to the MoD over the past half century was 1978 -- the year 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' was released," added Clarke.
Well said Mr. Clarke.
Media saturation is clearly the cause of these sightings.
Just as soon as the Americans put research balloons in the sky, sightings spiked. It's basically been a snowball ever since.
Today vampires are sexy, muppets are cuddly, and Monsters Scare Because They Care.
Pop culture's influences should be overstated as lies.
Neither should they be used to cover delusions.

So the F-16s that locked on to a UFO with their radar were delusional?
This is the problem with including such statistics in this report, it casts a pall of suspicion on all the legit stuff that is in the report. In short, by adding that little statistical analysis, they threw out anything useful in the report as the product of a Saturday Matinée.

UFOs are encountered by pilots and radar crews, yes.
But that doesn't mean that the unidentified craft are filled with little green men or even extraterrestrial.
There is no problem at all with these statistics.
They reveal much about human psychology.
