i checked into the Navajo Nation Inn, since i figured i'd be in the area for a while, and commuting up from Phoenix would be a nightmare.
that night, my sleep was plagued with odd dreams. some were obviously remembrances of past events, brought back to the fore by a re-association caused by being there on the rez and seeing things that resembled past cases. but some seemed to be events that had not yet come to pass, or might yet come to pass. flashes of moving shadows, a person i knew but didn't know, and man that didn't exist. and a few lines in a voice that was at the same time familiar and unfamiliar.
"the one that is many shall find the enigma, and set it on the true path."
being a precognitive can be a pain, especially when the ability only shows itself in dreams. you never know what is a dream and what is a vision. i didn't think anything of the dream then, and its only now that i realize that it was a sign of things to come.
in the morning, i called john at my store to make sure there were no problems before going down to breakfast. on the way down, i passed by the cleaning staff and couldn't help but overhear the gossip.
"a pack of coyotes, outside the hotel? you must be joking."
"Old TsoTse swears he saw them in the parking lot. big things too."
"he probably just saw some dogs."
needless to say, i was a little curious. the local coyote's tended to be solitary, and would never be brave enough to prowl around the parking lots. nor would the rez dogs, the feral strays. either way, that was odd.
breakfast was excellent, but there was a guy sitting at a table in the corner that seemed familiar to me. but a lot of people are regulars to this hotel, so i figured i'd seen him on a previous trip. i was about to head out for a trip to Canyon De Chelly when my cell went off.
it was joe, calling from the police station. "meet me at the station, there's been another one."
