The best I could tell: He didn't wish death upon himself as much as he didn't care. He'd intentionally put himself in situations that were desperate in an attempt to spare others the pain of death.

By the same token he wanted to pass from this life into the next.

The best way I could describe him in this regard, would be as a tormented soul.
