I'm not talking about teaching people how to hunt and slay monsters.

I'm talking about teaching people how to avoid them or escape them.

I've never avoided a monster for a very long time.

A year, tops.

Yeah, but you shouldn't have to.

It's the average person that needs to be taught defence and evasion.

It's the people who can and are properly trained who need to go on the attack.

I try to be as proactive as possible.

It's rare someone survives to their second encounter.

I'm not talking about oen of us. I'm talking about the average Joe. They need to know how to escape with their lives or fend of the monster until the proper folks can come and deal with it.

I am, too. They may know well what to do, but lack the ability to actually do it. Panic, freeze, bury head in the sand, etc.

Posted: Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:07 pm
by Ron Caliburn
Which is why they have to be taught to understand what the supernatural is as well as how to deal with it.

That way they won't be as vulnerable to the panic.

I agree. Unfortunately that's a really hard thing to accomplish. You can't prepare someone for actual combat, especially the kind that pop out from under your bed and tear your lungs out before you know you're dead.

That’s a sad outlook, Konrad.

It's a sad, unfair world Ellie. Ok, maybe thats too pessimistic, but I think Ron's being overly optimistic. The world will never be ready, not while it believes so hard in Reason, and Science. Two things which don't explain the supernatural, and so can't give the people a basis of belief that is needed to adequately prepare their minds for the sheer horrors they might face. Ron, I know you want to believe in the people, but they simply aren't ever going to accept the supernatural. Not until armageddon arrives at least.

Kolya's right, we need to educate those who do believe, and want to believe, and through those few, protect the rest.

You think that the people of this world actually follow reason?

I'd say they don't.

I'd also say that I'm very reasonable.

and again the attempt to paint us as murderers and lunatics.

Maybe we need to dig up some of our older tales to tell.

Untill something comes at this lady that her mind can not neatly explain as a trick or illusion she will not change. I only hope that her mind survives the experince in a reasonable state of sanitity, and in one piece pysically as well.

And I didn't get HUFFY! I was trying to get you to stop investigating a situation that would have either a) exposed how hurt I was at a situation that was totally unavoidable, or b) caused K to end up getting arrested for murder. And trust me, neither one is what I want.

I am reminded of Celeste . . .

Strangely, my thoughts have turned toward Celeste when reading these responses to Heather’s posts. If someone shows the slightest inclination of disbelief to our chosen . . . “hobby,” for lack of a better word, many of us get all defensive and uppity and “we’re oh so holier than thou” for the simple reason of they haven’t yet had an encounter with what most of us refer to as “the supernatural.”

Celeste, for all of her failings, admitted what she was going about and was essentially welcomed into the society, understandably with misgivings by more than a few. And yet when an ordinary human woman enters our circle and admits her agenda, far less dangerous than what Celeste’s possible agenda could have been, we hiss at her and try to ostracize her. The same attitude was taken with Debunker.

Why can’t we simply let her go about her business? It may hurt; in fact, it very likely will. I’ll be the first to admit there are some things about my life I wish to keep to myself; it would be inhuman not to have one secret or another. I am not saying we should fling open all doors, unlock every window, or rip aside every veil and give her access to all angles.

What I am saying is, “Shouldn’t we give her a chance?” I mean, if we are all so certain it’s true, then why to we fear her? If our faith in the supernatural is so strong, why are we afraid of having our faith challenged? I mean, she hasn’t even given us her story yet and already she has us on the defensive! The worst she can do is label us as murderers and whackjobs and lunatics; unless I’m mistaken, nothing that hasn’t been said about us before.

If I started hearing rumors in the river bottoms and went to the river bottoms and asked around trying to get some details on the latest happenings and everyone slammed their doors in my face and told me to mind my own business, I’d get a little curious, too; maybe even a little suspicious. So why shouldn’t Ms. Dawes be at least a little bit insulted?

So . . . shouldn’t we give her a chance? We might even make a friend for our efforts.

I didn't hiss.

As a matter of fact, I'm helping her. Nothing concrete yet but once her schedule allows her to come to Russia, she will not have to worry about the paperwork and red tape.

I have not exactly hissed either, thou I and my team have not been welcoming either, thou we have been a little distracted of late.

I'm perfectly willing to help out. I'm not trying to kick her out of anything, but I don't want K to go to prison either. Hell, I'd love to talk to her myself, if she doesn't start thinking I'll "get all huffy".

I'm always good for helping out a fellow native. Whaddayasay, Heath?

Hello Heather welcome to the party. As a recently initiated member of the crowd may I say I hope you don't get the pleasure. If you want theories, we gottem. You want stories, we got them too. You want proof, that's seems often hard to come by. Most times when you have the proof in your hand the only ones who will listen are those who have seen for theirselves. I haven't seen much but I can say this much, "Why didn't I take the blue pill."

Sorry, but at the moment the quote actually seems appropriate to me. When I found out about the society and all of the supernatural stuff going on around me I became interested in becoming a part of it. Now my wife is dead and I am stuck in Brazil. The only time that you will truly believe in what we have seen is when you are apart of it. This isn’t something that you can just do on the side. You are either in or not. If you look through this board you will see where many people just disappear because they got too close to something they shouldn’t have, without the proper knowledge or tools. The world is an awfully big place and there aren’t enough people here to watch it all. Oh, just remember; be careful as to what you wish for.

I don't think we have any obligation to be welcoming to one whose agenda seems to involve labelling as dangerous and criminals.

Hello Ms Dawes.

Perhaps I'm little too new ta the way thigns happen out here in the real world, but I think that if you're lookin' ta tell the story of the Lazlo Society ya should also look ta some of the best things the folks here have done.

Hannah

PS: I think this is the best one fer ya ta start with.

Heather, I assure you that I never mean to talk down to anyone. I have been accused of it and may have done it, but it is never intentional. That said the cliché I used was honestly me poking fun at my own position in this mess. I wanted to be apart of this world, and now I am. Just I’m a lot sadder for the experience. I’ve decided I need to get to the point where I stop being blown around by these things and take some action on my own. I’m still not fully clear on the best path to take. Please believe me, I honestly mean neither you nor anyone else here any disrespect. So if you feel that I did disrespect you then I sincerely apologize. I hope you find the answers you are looking for. Take care in Russia.

Gee, a reporter basing her story on opinions rather than actually talking to the people involved- who could have seen THAT one coming?

And by the way, I don't exactly remember you asking ME about anything, so bull shit your story's over! If all you're doing is just reading what we post, then writing the article about your personal opinions, then not only are you a shitty journalist, you're a pretty crappy person, too. And I was actually WILLING to help you out, which you never even bothered to take me up on. So, whatever. Go get frozen in a chunk of ice in Siberia for all I care now!

Actually all but one of the eyewitnesses have agreed to be interviewed by Heather.

She is digging for facts.

At least on this case she is.
