How many Lazlo Society Forum users adjust their board preferences. For example changing the 'darkness' background where you can see the light house to the 'lightness' where it looks like a more standard board?

When I chose my style there was only the option of a black background. I chose my font so that people would know it was me typing.

I'm sure Holister understands this. But before you go around telling anyone to "pull the stick out," you might want to make sure they're not waiting on news about their colleagues that flew in to Haiti a day before, or something else like it.

I'm not one of them.

Lazlo didn't intend anything for this place. He went missing decades before it was founded. I have read his stuff. He wasn't uptight and he did have a sense of humor. So yeah, invoking his name isn't really going to get you any place. Those who engage in serious minded study would call that an appeal to authority fallacy.

And while it's fair to say you may not like something, that is just one opinion. Just because you might not want to use a function or area of a site doesn't mean it shouldn't be there or that it's wrong to be there. Certainly having such a section available would cut down on thread derailments. Especially threads that would otherwise be serious.

No one here is a robot. I imagine most people here are just that, people. Humor is part of the human condition. Probably one of our better traits. There is a time and place to be serious and there is a time and place for goofing off. There's no reason they can't exist side by side. Except some stuffy beleif that acadamia and professionalism means having a stick shoved up your butt and your sense of humor surgically removed.

Further, you've mentioned yourself that some use humor to cope. So let them. Seriously. Next time you see someone here trying to joke around or blowing off steam, maybe they're dealing with lost loved ones. Or having to look the abyss in the eye. Or maybe they're just trying to cope with unbelievable and insane situations. At one of the few places where others can actually understand where they're coming from. Really, who the heck are you to tell them they can't?

None of the above is directed specifically at you. I've noticed (as have others) that you seem on edge. If you wish to have a serious discussion about that, I'm capable of being serious. Perhaps you could open a thread in the Philosophers corner section if that is your desire.

The solution for you is simple. Create a topic called Socialising and put all your socialising in it....
