Heathers Bylines
I used to work in the theoretical end of the spectrum. I know the feeling.
When I got into field operations, I quickly understood the need to be fast and lethal. Many of these things simply do not understand humanity, or simply do not care. More often than not, which many of us find regrettable, killing it is the only option.
Sure you can try to capture a werewolf, but were has that gotten anyone but dead themselfs?

I'd say this hits the nail on the head.Natasha wrote:When I got into field operations, I quickly understood the need to be fast and lethal. Although I would probably say regrettable for different reasons.

Yes it is.Ron Caliburn wrote:How come nobody ever wants to visit Russia in the winter? Really, isn't that the best time to go for that authentic Russian experience?
It's not as cold as people think. ALthough -71.2° C (that's about -96° F) has been recorded in Oymyakon out in Siberia.

Your information is in error, Ms. Dawes. Mr. Mach's goals are strictly educational in nature. The Lazlo Society founded this website as a public forum, where visitors can discuss "supernatural" topics and experiences.
Perhaps your sources were unaware of the difference between Society employees (like Pendragon and me) and posters?

The Society teaches people about the paranormal and how to protect themselves from it. (I'm not one of those paranormal experts, though. I perform other duties for the agency.)
What we don't do is encourage the masses to take drastic steps. You know as well as I how dangerous that would be: impressionable fools or the mentally ill running around trying to stake the neighbor they're convinced is a vampire.

I encourage people to arm and prepare to protect themselves and I help any who are willing to do just that.
The offense agaisnt these monsters needs to be undertaken by our government, they are the only ones with the resources to actually succeede.
There are a lot of theories as to why they don't step up and protect us, as to why they continue to encourage disbeleif in things that stalk the streets and alleys.
Until the government does what it needs to do, I go out there and do what I can.

I would like to think you are right Ron, but I have seen more than a few people, not deal with the idea that monsters, demons, and Magic are real, very well. Some have in fact reacted very badly, to the point they try to go after anything, or anyone they start to think is strange or off.
To find the darkness you have walk in the shadows.

Shady brings up a valid problem with educating the masses.
I always favoured the progressive approach where you introduce a small select few to the fold.
Otherwise you run the risk of shithead con artists and overzealous wannabes; both of which do far more harm than good to our situation.

I believe that educating the masses is just stupid. Like the Masses.
No one wants to know about the supernatural. In fact we go to great lengths to ignore it. Honestly, it would do more harm than good to let the world know that the supernatural is real.
Next thing you know, the Inquisition would return, so would witch-hunts, and every nut out there gunning down their neighbor just because they like to go out at night. And what about those of us with psychic or magical abilities. How long will it be before we are singled out as being "like" the enemy.
No, the world can never know. It can't handle it, not anymore.

That’s a sad outlook, Konrad . . .
That’s a sad outlook, Konrad. But it does bring up interesting dilemmas and questions.
Would the blood of the innocent be upon our hands because we could have warned them of the danger posed and did not? We run the risk of the scammers and the inquisition and so forth by declaring it, but we also miss the opportunity of teaching potential hunters like Ron and others who would believe us.
Who are we to take away the chance of defending themselves knowledgeably simply because we don’t think they’re up to snuff?

Sometimes the only thing to be done is to feel one’s way through the darkness.
