The darkness and my coat covered that my left shoulder had been cut fairly badly. I wished that I had not left the first aid kit in the car, but there was nothing that could be done about that now. Also, in getting knocked down my concentration was broken. I could only sense that something was there, but could not tell exactly where it was anymore.
I looked around once I got back up and realized that the basement and the extending tunnel was from another building. The mill must have been built on top of the foundation and basement of an older building still. I knew that in the 1800's and on the steel mills had mined the local hills, but I didn't realize that this plant had it's mines so close to home. The tunnels looked like they had been reinforced and it appeared to be safe for us to continue.
There was nothing to do but to finish this, so we started down the tunnel. Branching tunnels broke off every so often, but they were covered in dust and appeared to not have been kept in repair. As we walked further into the surrounding hills, I reloaded the shotgun. I was going to be prepared for whatever might happen.
There was no light other than that which came from the flashlights. And it was ere to hear next to nothing within the caves. Without any real reference I lost track of exactly how far I traveled. The vastness of the cave that existed at the end of the tunnel surprised me, but not as much as the sounds of the people crying in terror in response to the red lights.

Erik was on point several paces ahead of me. As we came out of a passage into a large chamber I heard a bunch of screaming, human screaming, and the echo was really loud, but I could understand some of the shouts. They were shouting things like "help me!" basically. Our lights must have really put the fear into them. We retreated back into the passage to get reset. There were two more creatures according to Erik. He shouted into the room, "nobody move! We can't help you if you are moving!"
I was worried, however, that they would not listen to him. If they started moving we might not be able to get a clean shot or otherwise engage the creatures that had registered on Erik's psychic radar earlier. And they were again on his radar, in that large chamber, somewhere. I needed to get in a little closer to maximise the range on my wards. Just as we were getting ready to move he grabbed my arm stopping me. And then I heard the snarling and growling approaching us.
I activated two sleep wards just in case the first one fizzled, hopefully the second would get the job done. I managed to catch Erik out of the corner of my eye as he moved quick to engage the creature. The report of his shotgun rippled hard throughout the caverns. The next thing I knew he was back and looking at me with a sort of smile on his face. "Another Hell Hound," he exhaled, "two down, one to go."
"I'm thinking dybbuk," I said.
Erik nodded briefly, "it all adds up," he said.
It all added up to a dybbuk. Although I secretly hoped for another Hell Hound, I knew it was not so.
"Ready?" he said.
By this time I had been recharged with some adrenaline. "Yea," I replied. "Can you pick it out?" I asked.
Erik smiled deviously, but I really not knew what it meant. But he was moving and so I not had time to ask more. I moved with him. As our lights scanned the crowd we saw many were laying on the ground, either drunk, dead, or asleep by my ward. I activated a Burning Pain ward and at the same time one of the 'corpses' sat up screaming Erik had picked it out from the crowd.

I started working my way through the crowd, trying to see how many people were still alive. So many dead, it was sickening to see all the half eaten decaying bodies around. I could smell human waste coming from one corner and did not have any desire to head in that direction. As moved I got some of the people to their feet and had them move towards the exit.
I was about halfway through the mess when one of the 'corpses' sat up and lunged at me screaming. The force of it's backhand threw me and the shotgun flew from my hands. As I hit the ground the cave became a mixture of loud noises and light. The creature roaring, the people screaming, and the sound of gunfire from Natasha's gun.
The light from the shotgun had turned white as the lens from the flashlight had fallen out. And I watched as the corpse was shed like a second skin and a Dybbuk stepped out. Natasha was reloading but the creature was approaching fast. I pulled my own handgun and emptied the rest of the clip into it's back. The creature never even hesitated, but continued after Natasha.
It was almost upon her when it screamed in pain. It was as if it was on fire, and I thought I could see waves of heat coming off the creature. Natasha backed away from the creature, reloaded and started firing again. I took the cue and did the same. It tried to attack us, but with the pain that her ward was causing it didn't get close to us. It would try to attack and we would dodge and return fire. Many, many bullets later, it was on the ground turning into beetles.
It was only a little while later that the people were back in the night sky. I thanked Natasha for her assistance, I couldn't have done it without her. The ward she used was just distracting enough to keep it off guard and her sleeping wards probably saved my life.

If Erik could not have accomplished the job without me, there is certainly no way I could have done it without him. There are those in our Society that have abilities to sense and track the supernatural (Erik) and those that do not (me), but with a little bit of preparation and team work, the combination is very powerful and effective. I had 8 extra magazines with me. I used 7.25 of them. Those dybbuks are crazy tough.
At that point I really was not sure what to do. Back home we just go into debriefing and then eventually make it home. I figured the sun would be coming up soon, and then I looked at my watch. I tried to hide my surprise. I really thought were down there for a lot longer. The interesting combination of my shyness and the fact that I shared three very seriously dangerous encounters with Erik resulted in a brief uncomfortable silence. I blurted out, "I need a drink." Although I really was not sure if that was a true statement.
We got out of there as soon as possible. As we were walking Erik mumbled to himself, "going to have to do something about those gremlins." I never seen them and when we encountered them earlier I somehow did not make the connection. I only heard them and thanks to Erik's quick reaction was not squished by them. As soon as Erik made the comment, things made sense. I somehow even did not catch on to his "imp" description.
We made it back to the hotel and I fell right to sleep, probably seconds before my head reached the pillow. I even did not take off my shoes. He returned later in the morning to take me to the airport.

I hunted down the gremlins a few nights later. I had to take a few days to let my injuries heal a little. It seems like more often than not I am working bruised and cut. If the trend keeps up I am going to be nothing but scar tissue.
Anyways, it was good to work with someone like Natasha. She is right about one thing, it takes teamwork in cases like this. Each of us has their part to play in fighting the darkness. Thank you again for your help.
