Near Death Experience

Post by Phoenix »

So some egg heads think they're closer to understanding near death experiences. Or at least they can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

That article also implies that the brain is active for several seconds after an event that stops blood flow to it. So, for example, theoretically a decapitated individual may have several seconds of awareness before they shut down then.

That's somewhat horrifying.

I'm sure I've seen a bodiless head try to scream.
Ain't nuthin' that can't die.

Decapitated heads do a lot of things - twitching for example- but arguably out of reflex. It does generally take about 15 seconds after cardiac arrest for someone to lose consciousness, though probably a lot less time with decapitation.

Of course, decapitation produces no direct trauma to the brain, so it's certainly possible.

As someone who has taken more than their fair share of heads, I can tell you that it is more than a little creepy to watch.

Odd though, I have never been squeamish about it before. Why am I now?
