How do they recruit?

Silly cartoon aside, how do shadow organizations recruit?

When it comes to organized crime, you're either born into it or recruited one on one by someone who's already in the organization. It makes it hard (though not impossible) to infiltrate such groups. My Da was recruited based on his skill set. I was born into it.

Are cults the same way? Are their variations? What have all of you found in your encounters?

A lot of folks are born into it, but there's a certain degree of active recruitment.

PS: In the Ancient Greek intro course I'm taking, we're looking a lot at classic mythology. In class the prof gave a list of minor deities including Nemesis . . . person in the seat next to me was kinda worried by the big grin on my face.
