Augmented Humans

Post by Kolya »

We got the call to arrest yet another mage who had reached his hands in deep in several criminal enterprises from arms dealing to human to smuggling to pharmacological augmentation of humans. It's been an ongoing investigation actually. We killed one such human a while back. After more than a year of intense investigations, we moved in to decapitate the organisation.

I was riding shotgun, literally. I pressed the muzzle against the lock and pulled the trigger. Wood splinters and lock parts flew and I grabbed the handle of the door and pulled it back as my team poured in some flashbangs. I came in last and the shit had already hit the fan.

Lyosha was hit and Roma was already covering. I saw two bad guys down as I heard someone running down the hallway towards the back of the apartment. Lyosha was back on his feet, his armour had taken almost all of the damage. We regrouped and slowly made our way down the hall, which ended in an 'L' shape. As we approached we popped a couple more flashbangs.

These guys hardly seemed to notice. I shot one in the face with my shotgun spraying bits of skull, brain, lips, tongue, and eyeball across the back side of the room. I pretty sure he didn't notice that either. With spiderman fast speed one came bolting into my peripheral vision and I felt the familiar pain of a knife sliding in to my gut, twice. I took one hand off of my shotgun and buried my fingers deep in his eye sockets and slammed him to the ground, pounding his head with two silent thuds, a crack, and then soft wet smacks. I rolled to my side and saw the handle sticking out of me; the blade was in deep.

As I was rolling I saw Sasha's blade flash and the clank of swords clashing; and then I saw it flash again as it sliced sideways deep into Sasha's opponent's abdomen. I could smell his shit and bile and fuck knows what as it poured out of his midsection. Another flash and the poor asshole's head was severed and hit the ground the before the body did.

A few more gun shots rang out. I regained my feet and reloaded.

All of the bad guys dead and alive were augmented.

The apartment was cleared. Our mage wasn't home. It's only a matter of time, however, before we catch up to him.

In the meantime, if anyone has information about augmented humans or slave girls from Africa, please do let me know. Before Shang Li died he mentioned to Natasha something about augmentation and it seems that old Japanese fellow had some information, too. I just don't remember right now. I'll probably be digging in.

Just as soon as my stab wounds heal.

It's hard to tell. The eggheads are still going over the mutogens and chemicals found in the blood, although it does not seem to be entirely chemical in nature, but also genetic experimentation going on as well. It's really strange stuff. Even if they told me, I'm not sure I would understand the mumbo-jumbo.

"Give it to me straight, damn it!" I said.

Egghead replied, "Then I don't know what it is."

I wish Natasha had the opportunity to speak more with Shang Li about it. Maybe Kei would know something about it. I just realised that I haven't seen her posting; she's alright, isn't she?

She's been quiet for a while.

Think they have anything to do with what was stalking Nat?

Definitely possible.

We've been working on this case a while and she does seem like an easy target to either trade for information or just torture for information.

So right now I really don't know one way or another.

and what is a magic user doing with advanced genetic or medical technology anyway - most of the ones I've dealt with tend to focus on breaking the rules of nature isntead of applying them?

It's disturbing me, too.

He first became known to us as a sort of low level enforcer, kneecapper, and shot up the ranks fairly quick.

Maybe there's magic in the mojo.

Maybe he's learned some arcane secret through arcane arts.

Maybe he's got a strange hobby.

Maybe he's got diverse interests.

I don't know.

But I intend to find out.

You remind me of Sasha.

I think they sound like more than a handful for most of us - especially those who use ESP to spot supernatural threats.

That makes it very attractive, even for a mage, to deploy such people.

Maybe; from what I've heard from the eggheads it's not a pleasant way to live......or die.

I've only just started digging into what he left behind here on the boards and anything he may have shared with Natasha.

I do remember about the dying early comment.

Maybe there are alternatives that can produce good results without major risk.

Its probably more of a "Higher the benefit higher the consequence" sort of thing. We have steroids that'll jack a person's strength up now that people can live on. There was a anime movie on the other week about a virus that gave people different superhuman abilities but killed them within a few years.

Never pegged you for an anime fan.

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.

The quest to be bigger, faster, stronger is an unending one. Something I know a little about. It tends to strip away your humanity.

Perhaps, but we need to find ways to level the playing field, as long as we are the few, we should be the best.
